Pantanal, Brazil

Adventure Quest Logo

In the center of South America, largely in the country of Brazil, lies the Pantanal, a natural region encompassing the world’s largest tropical wetland.  Boasting the highest concentration of wildlife in South America, including the largest population of jaguars found anywhere, the Pantanal is a top destination for wildlife photographers and enthusiasts.

Jaguars of the Pantanal

Join us on this small group adventure into the heart of the Pantanal in search of jaguars and an astonishing number of other wildlife. The highlight of this immersive experience: Motoring through the tributaries of The Meeting of the Waters State Park in Mato Grosso, where the jaguars hunt and rest along the river’s edge.

The Jaguar

The jaguar, “Panthera Onca”, is the largest and strongest big cat species in the Americas and the third largest in the world. The Northern Pantanal is home to 4,000 – 5,000 jaguars, the largest density of these big cats in the world. In the Porto Jofre region, the Jaguar ID Project has identified over 120 individuals; this data is used to help better understand the local population, their behavior and their territories in an effort to develop sustainable programs to foster coexistence between jaguars and local communities.

The name “jaguar” comes from the Tupi Guarani word Yaguara, which means “he who kills with one leap”. They are exceptionally strong ambush hunters as well as excellent swimmers.

Other Wildlife

While the star of the show is undoubtedly the majestic jaguar, other species we may see include caiman, yellow anaconda, capybara, tapir, marmoset, giant river otter, giant anteater and a mind blowing number of bird species (over 600!) including hyacinth macaw, toco toucan, jabiru stork, roseate spoonbill and many more!

Itinerary

To begin the adventure, after a restful night at the Cuiabá airport hotel, our group will be picked up in an air conditioned van for the drive along the Transpantaneira Road to our first destination: Porto Jofre. Along the way we’ll make numerous spots to view wildlife on this road that is possibly one of the best wildlife viewing roads in the world! We’ll have the comfortable Santa Rosa Pantanal Hotel as our home base from which to launch our full day river outings. After 5 full days on the river, we’ll hop into the van back up the Transpantaneira Road to Piuval where we’ll switch to land safari vehicles to search for Giant Anteaters, more jaguars and other wildlife. We’ll have 2 nights at Pousada Piuval before a morning van departure back to Cuiabá where we’ll spend our last evening together before flights home the next day.
