Brown Bears
The bears that inhabit Katmai National Park and Preserve are brown bears (Ursus arctos). About 2,200 brown bears are estimated to inhabit the park, making Katmai one of the premier brown bear viewing areas in the world.
Noted as some of the largest bears in the world, adult male brown bears in Katmai can weigh over 1000 lbs (454 kg) at their heaviest in the fall and typically weigh 600-900 lbs. Adult females average about 1/3 less than adult males.
